Option A: 120 Hour MixLearn TESOL

Overview

The Teach Travel Asia 120 hour MixLearn TESOL course includes three weeks of on-line learning, completed while the applicant is still in their home country, followed by 10 days of in-class learning and practical training at Teach Travel Asia’s school in Hua Hin, Thailand. The total course time (including in class and homework) is 120 hours. The on-line section is taught on Teach Travel Asia’s new, advanced eLearn™ platform. During the first three weeks, applicants will learn about the theory and practice of teaching English, lesson planning and how to teach reading, listening, speaking and grammar. Applicants will then come to Teach Travel Asia’s school in Thailand, where they will spend 10 days learning Thai language & culture, and preparing lessons and teaching at a non-profit English camp for disadvantaged children. Clients who complete the course will receive a TESOL certificate, and go on to be placed in a Thai school.

Learning Objectives

This course has the following key learning objectives:

• To develop a in-depth understanding of the concepts and principles of teaching English as a second language. This includes understanding the different theories of, and approaches to, teaching English, and particularly the Teach Travel Asia method and its roots
• Understand how the process of second language development occurs
• Understand how the teacher’s role changes depending on the type of student
• Develop a repertoire of routines, skills and strategies to teach English to people of all ages
• Develop the ability to plan structured lessons
• Gain confidence and familiarity with teaching ESL through significant in-class and practical training

Eligibility

Anyone is eligible to take the MixLearn TESOL. However, if clients wish to obtain job placement, they must apply for this separately and be accepted. Applicants for job placement must be between the ages of 19 and 59 and possess evidence of high school graduation. The Teach Travel Asia MixLearn TESOL course is recommended for applicants that want to teaching in Thailand. Applicants for other countries are directed to take the Teach Travel Asia 120 hour On-line TESOL.

The Teach Travel Asia Teach Travel Asia 120-Hour TESOL course consists of the following modules:

• Module 4: Teaching Reading
• Module 5: Teaching Listening
• Module 6: Teaching Speaking
• Module 7: Classroom Management

Distance Learning (Week 1-3)

Week One
The first week of the Teach Travel Asia TESOL is an introduction on many levels. First, students will introduce themselves and get to know one another through sharing experiences and providing feedback. Second, the instructor will take students through an introduction to Teach Travel Asia and its history. The curriculum also includes education on the countries students have selected as teaching destinations though reading and research on recent news and events, work culture, and overall culture. Students will be required to explain how the article they have chosen and what they have learned about Thailand will likely affect them as teachers and guests in the country. Finally, students will be provided with an introduction to the background and theory in the disciple of teaching English as a second language. Students will also receive an introduction into the history and theory in English as a second language. Finally, there will be an introduction to Thai culture and language.

Week Two
During week two students will develop their first lesson plan and receive feedback on it. They will also be introduced to how to teach grammar and reading, including researching examples of lesson plans on these topics, analyzing them, and providing feedback on other students’ posts. There will be extensive instructor feedback and peer discussion.

Week Three
During week three (the final week of the distance learning component) students will study will learn about how to teach listening and speaking. There will be homework on both topics, and extensive instructor feedback and peer discussion.

Awards

Upon successful completion of the course with a passing grade of 83% or better, students will receive a certificate demonstrating that they successfully completed a 120-hour MixLearn TESOL with Teach Travel Asia.
