King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI) Congress

On March 23, 2012 Michael Volpe gave a presentation at the annual King Prajadhipok’s Institute (KPI) Congress. The theme of the three-day conference was, “Citizenship and the Future of Thai Democracy”. Held at the United Nations building in Bangkok, Thailand, the conference attracted more than 1,000 attendees and brought together academic experts, civil servants, and democracy advocates from across Asia and beyond. Michael gave a presentation on best practices in civic education and engagement from five countries and also published a separate research paper in the KPI Conference Book entitled: Civic Participation and Engagement. “I am honored to have been asked to present at the KPI Congress. I strongly support their efforts to promote civic education and participation among Thai youth, and particularly women and minorities”, Michael said. “This is an important area of focus for me as in my professional capacity I want to train English teachers to integrate discussions of broader social topics into their classroom lessons and to engage students on these topics. “

Teach Travel Asia Introduces new, interactive component in their 120 on-line TESOL course.

Teach Travel Asia has recently introduced video Skype-based lesson presentations by students in their 120 hour on-line TESOL course. These Skype sessions entail a student presenting their full lesson to the TESOL instructor and getting real-time feedback on lesson content and delivery, use of teacher aids, and tempo. “This innovation further enhances the quality of the Teach Travel Asia on-line TESOL experience”, said Michael Volpe, Director of Teach Travel Asia’s Education Division. “I teach for several universities with on-line programs in the United States and none of them provide this degree of teacher-student interaction in their classrooms.”

Teach Travel Asia offers an internationally accredited 120 hour TESOL utilizing a fully interactive on-line classroom. For more information on the Teach Travel Asia 120 hour on-line TESOL, please contact Michael Volpe at mvolpe@teachtravelasia.com or visit our website at www.teachtravelasia.com/tesol_courses/tesol-on-line/.

Teach Travel Asia Set to Participate in National Elephant Day

Monday, March 12th is National Elephant Day in Thailand. The elephant holds an important place in Thai history and culture. It symbolizes strength, character, dignity, and gentleness, and these are qualities that Thais are taught to embody from an early age. Historically the elephant has helped to both build and defend empires, and is popular in Thai stories, films and even as a symbol for Thai products. H.M. King Bhumibol has a stable of Royal Elephants. A white Elephant is especially sacred and auspicious. When one is found, it immediately becomes the property of the reigning Monarch.

On Sunday, March 11, students from the March TESOL group will go to Hutsadin Elephant Sanctuary to help prepare for a celebration on Monday. This will include baking a massive fruit cake and preparing other food to give out to visitors. On Monday morning, students and Teach Travel Asia staff will travel to Hustadin to help greet visitors and coordinate various ceremonies and activities. The highlight of the day will be several displays of artistic capability and physical strength by Hutsadin’s elephants, whom will be wearing traditional decorative dress and will be led by Songkran, a lovable and precocious four year old elephant who was abandoned by his mother when he was a baby.
